ANSWERS TO THE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is as ECO LIGHT TUNNEL solar tube?

The ECO LIGHT TUNNEL solar tube is a modern solution that allows for lighting rooms with natural light. The skylight is available in two types – with a flexible and a rigid tube.

How does the ECO LIGHT TUNNEL solar tube work?

Sunlight falls into the light-transmitting tube through the skylight dome mounted on the roof. The rays of light are then transported to the diffuser by way of mirror reflections. The diffused light entering the room illuminates it evenly without causing reflections on smooth surfaces.

What are the differences between flexible and rigid tube skylights?

Skylights with the FlexiTube flexible tube are intended mainly for small and medium distances (up to 3 m from the roof). The construction of the flexible tube makes it possible to bypass obstacles on the way from the dome (on the roof) to the place where the diffuser is placed (in the ceiling).

Skylights with the UltraBright rigid tube without an adjustable bend are designed for installation in settings where the hole in the ceiling is directly under the hole on the flat roof. Using one or two adjustable bends allows us to avoid an obstacle or set a convenient angle adjusted to the pitch of the roof. The latest nano-reflective coating technology used in rigid tubes gives us the possibility of transferring light over considerable distances, up to more than a dozen meters. This is possible thanks to the 99.5% reflectance ratio. To give you a daily life example, the UltraBright rigid tube is approximately 20% more reflective than home mirrors.

What roof coverings can a solar tube be used on?

Our skylights can be installed on any type of roof, although if the roof covering is corrugated, an adaptive collar must be used. In the case of pitched roofs, UltraBright tubes need to be accompanied by a bend, making it possible to change the direction of the light transmitting tube.

CAUTION! Do not install a skylight on a roof with a slope greater than 60°!

What are the available sizes of the ECO LIGHT TUNNEL solar tubes?

Solar Tubes with the FlexiTube flexible tube come in three sizes, with tube diameters of 250 (25 cm), 350 (35 cm) and 550 (55 cm).

Solar Tubes with the UltraBright rigid tube are available in the following sizes: 250 (25 cm), 350 (35 cm), 550 (55 cm) and 850 (85 cm – for industrial applications). The product’s design makes it possible to use bends with an angle of 90 degrees, allowing for the light-transmitting tube to run horizontally on a selected section.

What accessories are available for the ECO LIGHT TUNNEL solar tubes?

Available accessories are:

  • an adaptive collar – used for installing a skylight on corrugated roof coverings (tiles, corrugated sheet, etc.),
  • a lighting fixture – allowing for the use of a skylight as a source of light after dark,
  • a cover sleeve – protecting the pipe when passing through concrete ceilings or other structures with sharp edges,
  • an insulated base – used to raise the dome 40 cm above the roof level. This solution is used on flat roofs.
  • a crosspiece – used as anti-burglary protection in solar tubes with a diameter of 55 cm.
  • a lifting ring – used when installing a skylight with a tube over 3 m long.
  • a square ceiling kit for standard ceilings and a 60 × 60 cm version for modular ceilings
  • a ceiling element galvanically covered with copper or chrome

What is the maximum length of the tube?

In the case of skylights with a flexible light transmitting tube, we recommend using a tube with a length not exceeding 6 m in case of a 550 (55 cm) diameter, 3 m in case of a 350 (35 cm) diameter, and 2.1 m in case of a 250 (25 cm) diameter.

When using the UltraBright rigid tube, the length is virtually unlimited, since special tube coatings allow for an almost lossless transmission of light.

CAUTION! In the case of a 550 (55 cm) solar tube longer than 3.6 m it is necessary to use an ECO LIGHT TUNNEL lifting ring

How to choose the length of the tube?

Following the path where the light-transmitting tube will be placed, measure the section from the place where the dome will be installed (usually on the roof surface or on the insulated base) to the desired location of the diffuser (usually in the ceiling of the room to be illuminated). The tube should be at least a few centimetres longer than the measured distance.

What is the maximum bend angle for the flexible light-transmitting tube?

The light-transmitting tube can be bent at almost any angle (up to over 120 degrees). Please remember, however, that the larger the bend angle, the greater the loss of light on the way.

Can the UltraBright rigid light transmitting tube be bent?

No. UltraBright tubes cannot be bent. The direction of the light transmitting line can be adjusted in other ways. One way to do so is with the use of adjustment bends, which can change the tube direction by any angle between 0 and 65 degrees. This enables the installation of a skylight in buildings with a sloping roof.

We also offer bends with an angle of up to 90 degrees, making it possible, among other things, to install selected sections of the tube horizontally.

The use of two bends makes it easier to lead the light transmitting tube to the chosen installation spot in the ceiling.

Is it possible to install a skylight in a vertical wall?

Although possible, we do not recommend installing the skylight directly on the wall. It is not an optimal solution due to a significant decrease in lighting efficiency and a more difficult installation, including potential problems with sealing. Solar tubes work best when the dome is placed in a sunny spot, facing the sky. In the case when we cannot use the roof, the best workaround is to build an extension (a small roof) with a slope of at least 15, but not more than 60 degrees.

What are the materials used to make the individual components of the ECO LIGHT TUNNEL skylight?

DOME – Polycarbonate with a UV filter
DIFFUSERS – PMMA with a UV filter
TUBE – metallized polyester (flexible tube). Aluminium and silver with reflective nano coatings (rigid tube).
FLEXIBLE PIPE FRAMEWORK – spring steel wire
ROOF FLASHING – coated aluminium (corrosion-proof)
LOWER RING – stainless steel
CEILING FRAME – white ABS plastic

What are the heat losses?

The value of the heat transfer coefficient for Eco Light Tunnel products is:

– up to U=2.3W/(m2.K) for a 250 (25 cm) diameter tube (surface area of the diffuser: 0.05 m2)

– up to U=2.2W/(m2.K) for a 350 (35 cm) diameter tube (surface area of the diffuser: 0.1 m2)

– up to U=2.1W/(m2.K) for a 550 (55 cm) diameter tube (surface area of the diffuser: 0.24 m2)

– up to U=1.8W/(m2.K) for a 850 (85 cm) diameter tube (surface area of the diffuser: 0.57 m2)

The amount of light provided by the solar tubes and the lighted surface?

The amount of light supplied by a solar tube depends on many factors. These include, but are not limited to, exposure, roof slope, pipe length and angle of deflection for flexible pipes. It is best when the solar tube is located on the south side and the pipe is as short as possible and slightly bent in the case of flexible pipes. The UltraBright rigid tube skylight lights the same area, but with a much more intense light.

  • Solar Tube 250 (ø25 cm) lightens a room of dimensions up to 2×2 m
